Role Description:
Are you passionate about mathematics and interested in making a meaningful difference in the learning experience of your peers? The Department of Mathematics & Statistics invites motivated students to apply for Math Student Learning Assistant positions. In these roles, you will support student success, deepen your mathematical understanding, and contribute to a welcoming and engaging academic community at Chico State.
Positions are available as Math Learning Lab Tutors, Embedded Math Tutors, or Math Course Graders. All positions are associated with the Mathematics & Statistics Department at Chico State.
Description of Duties:
Below is an overview of the three roles available. Candidates may indicate interest in one or more roles and may be selected for multiple positions based on qualifications and departmental needs.
Math Learning Lab Tutors
Primary Responsibilities: Provide individual and group support to students in the Math Learning Lab, promoting independent learning and serving as role models. Use interactive strategies and thoughtful questioning to help students engage with course material and develop effective study habits.
Supervision: Work under the supervision of the Developmental Math Coordinator, with additional lead work direction from the Student Learning Center Tutoring Coordinator
Typical Hours: 4–12 hours per week
Location: Meriam Library, 4th Floor
Embedded Math Tutors
Primary Responsibilities: Support student learning in assigned courses by assisting with classroom activities, encouraging student engagement, and helping to foster a sense of belonging. Attend class sessions, coordinate regularly with the course instructor and the Developmental Math Coordinator, and, depending on the course, assist with grading. May also hold office hours to provide additional student support. Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills are essential.
Supervision: Work under the supervision of the course instructor and the Developmental Math Coordinator
Typical Hours: 3–8 hours per week (varies by course assignment)
Location: Assigned classroom, Holt Hall (Room 120), or other agreed-upon campus locations
Math Course Graders
Primary Responsibilities: Review and evaluate student work accurately and professionally according to instructor-provided grading criteria. Coordinate directly with instructors to pick up and return assignments, and maintain confidentiality and attention to detail throughout the grading process.
Supervision: Work under the supervision of the course instructor and the Developmental Math Coordinator.
Typical Hours: 1–4 hours per week (varies by course assignment)
Location: Holt Hall (Rooms 101 or 120) or other agreed-upon locations
Who Should Apply?
Students who enjoy explaining mathematical ideas, supporting peers, and building a welcoming learning environment are encouraged to apply. We welcome applicants from a range of majors, class levels, and backgrounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and a grade of B or higher in the math course(s) they intend to support. Candidates must be enrolled at Chico State and remain in good academic standing throughout employment. Exceptions to minimum eligibility requirements may be granted at the discretion of the hiring committee.
Strong interpersonal communication, organization, and time management skills are required. Applicants should be prepared to support students with diverse learning styles, identities, and lived experiences, including those from academically or financially disadvantaged backgrounds, ethnically diverse communities, and first-generation college-going families.
Previous experience with tutoring, grading, mentoring, advising, or academic coaching is highly valued. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors, Mathematics and Statistics majors, students with work-study allocations, and applicants who have prior experience with Chico State math courses and faculty.

- Students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic term.
- Students may work up to 40 hours per week when classes are not in session.

All work must be performed within the State of California.
Compliance training completion (approximately 4 hours of work time) is required of this position within the first 30 days of work.
